… the next book in Bruce Spizer’s album series, The Beatles A Hard Day’s Night & More, set for publication in August. And that “More” covers a surprisingly large terrain. During The Beatles breakthrough year of 1964, Capitol, Vee Jay, United Artists, Swan, Odeon, Polydor, Atco, and MGM were all releasing whatever Beatle material they could claim the rights to (including their 1961 sessions in Germany with Tony Sheridan), so there’s quite a bit to keep track of; it’s a story of marketing as much as music. Other chapters (some written by other authors) put the band’s story in context by covering world events of the time, the British Invasion acts that rose in the wake of The Beatles’ arrival, and films (including a detailed look at rock films). It’s another fine entry in the series, available in standard and PDF editions, and an autographed, numbered collector’s edition. Start saving shelf space for Spizer’s next book.
